Research and Inspiration

Principle 2.By understanding the various ‘practices & processes’ of illustrators, designers, photographers one is able to progress and advance one’s own practice.

I have chosen this image done by the Illustrator/Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein.I think it's intended meaning is a form of self expression and also maybe related to society and culture. This piece of work falls into the category of Illustration. You might find an image like this in a comic book or in the back pages of a newspaper.I also think the artists work could also be quite personal.

The visual pieces work of intention could be for us to buy a comic book as they are very illustrated and eye catching. This image could also be used as an advert or a poster.

The visuals capture our attention alot as the image is very bold provoking us to think about what is being communicated to us.I think it works very well,as you can tell this is not just a poster or an illustration, because a  form of emotion is being shown in the image. It questions us to think about what is being said.

I would say that the targeted audience is people 20-40.This is because alot of young or middle age people would go through relationship problems or marital problems and I think they could relate to this image of the women crying.

This also might just be targeted at the female gender,as males don't usually show emotion, and the main person in the image is that of a women.Cultural background also plays a part in the target audience as many people of a different ethnicity are not involved in relationships before marriage and are against courting.
The signs which might tell us this is the fact that non coloured people have been used in the image. The fact that the man is holding onto the women suggests to us that this piece of work has a sense of emotion in it.This is one the signs that tell us this and also because she is crying.

Principle 3.The notion of 'inspiration' derives from constant inquiry, based on research, observation, recording and experimentation.

I have chosen this piece of work done by Tracey Emin called "Everyone I have ever slept with" as the inspiration for this piece of work has come from   her own personal life.

I think the intended meaning of this piece of work is that it's a form of self expression and for an exhibition. It also can be related to society because the artist has opened up about her personal experiences with the intended audience about who she has shared a bed with throughout her life.

I think this piece of work comes under contemporary art as it's quite surreal and is quite like an installation that has been put together. You would find this piece of work in a museum or a contemporary art gallery.

The intention of this piece of work is to get people to think about it,and why and how she decided to create this piece of work that is quite personal to her and her views on everyone she has ever shared a bed with from normal circumstances and to being sexually involved with someone by sharing the bed with them in that kind of way.

This piece of conceptual art looks quite graphical because of the Typography that has been done by hand,if you saw it in the museum, you would know that it was an installation and not a print. You can tell by looking at it that it's a photograph that has been taken of an exhibition at a museum.

When looking at it and reading all the names,it makes you wonder what it is relating to,but by knowing the fact that it has been titled "Everyone I have ever Slept with" you then know that the names are the people whom she has shared a bed with. The Typography of it is very colourful and instantly captures your attention to make you want to read it.

The targeted audience would probably be 20-35 as I think they would have a keen interest in modern comtemporary art of this nature.

Connectivity-Cultural Context within your chosen medium,Notions of Originality

Principle 2.Cultural Context within your chosen medium

I have chosen this Photograph by Rankin as I think it's intended meaning might be advertising or it is similar to the BBC ident used in it's adverts.

It's trying to communicate a visual piece of work which is Photography.

I like the way this piece of work has a commercial intention to engage people through the photograph. This visual would capture people's attention.

I think the photograph works really well as it also shows a form of nature as the model is surrounded by leaves in a forest. It also signals the sign of a season change. It could be telling us that it's Summer as the leaves in the picture are very green and you can see the sun shining through.

The audience targeted is young people in the age range of 20-30 years. You might see this image in a Photographic magazine of some sort.People who are not into Photography or nature, might not like this.People who are into some things such as Contemporary culture might like this piece or work as it is a visually informative piece.

This piece might only be targeted at specific cultural groups, this is because the model in the Photograph is not wearing any clothes, this sign tells us this.

The piece also provokes us to think, this is because other people might have different or mixed views about the photograph having some form of nudity in it.

The photograph is very visually striking so might be used to advertise a product also, that also comes into the form of advertising that you see on the TV.

I think the visual language could be communicated better, but above all it works very well in engaging it's audience and making us question who specifically is this piece for.

You can tell this piece is not an illustration or poster, this is because it has no words or drawings to inform us about this,so we just assume it is a photograph which is trying to capture our attention.

Principle 1.Notions of Originality

I have chosen this print which has been done by Hokusia.I think it was created because the artist wanted to show the beauty of the sea and the waves that have formed.

I think it's intended meaning is that it's a piece of work that is supposed to be for people to look at and appreciate it.I also think that the artist has created this piece of work as a form of personal expression,it also is asking a question about society in the world we live in today.

This print might also be telling us about something that might have happened in the past, such as a storm or tsunami. The image is very detailed and graphical showing us a clear picture or telling us some sort of story.

I think the print really makes the person think and engages people's thoughts.I think it works very well as  you can tell this isn't just a piece of artwork or a print someone has made,it is also a story the artist is telling us through the image. This piece of work could maybe work better if there was some typography somewhere alongside the image.

The audience is targeted at people who might have an interest in prints and Illustrations. It might also be targeted at someone who is japanese or who has an interest in the culture.I would say people in the age range of 20-35 might have an interest in this piece of work.I don't think this would be for young people as it's not a cartoon or Illustration, and would probably not appeal to them.

There are signs in this piece of work that tell us who it's for.The fact that it has some small writing in a foreign language such as Japense, tells us who might have done this print. The visual of the big wave also gives us another clue. This is because in Japan there are many natural disasters that can happen or might have occured in the past such as a tsunmi. The big wave tells us this sign as large waves are related to tsunami's which happen.

Development of Creative Thought and Structure in Illustration and Graphic Art

Development of Creative Thought and Structure in Illustration and Graphic Art

Principle 2.Getting rid of assumptions

I have chosen this piece of work by David LaChapelle as it's quite surrealist piece of imagery.

This piece of visual work is trying to communicate some sort of Surrealism. It falls into the category of Photography.

I think it could be the Photographers own point of view in how he is trying to engage with the audience by creating something that looks quite unusual.

I think this piece of work is trying to inform us of the link between Photography and Fine Art and also Surrealism. As Surrealism was quite a big art movement, the photographer is communicating with us through this visual image piece that it can still be seen in art today.

He is also trying to capture our attention as through his work, giving you the impression that you are part of the image.
It also makes you think as you thinking how someone could come through the walls of the room. The visual image piece also confuses you.
The work is for someone who would have an interest in Photography,or someone who has an interest in Visual Communication such as Graphic Design.
I think the target audience is aimed at young people in the age range of 25-30.Someone who has an interest in Advertising and Photographic magazines might be interested in this piece of work.

Sometimes it's difficult to make assumptions on who the work might be for as people are into alot of different things and have different interests.

As the visual piece is photographic and it's not an illustration you might see it as some sort of advertisement in a magazine or next to a relevant article.

If the visual piece had some typography next to it,you might not think it was just a Photograph. But the signs that show us it is,is that it's just a Photograph on it's own.

Principle 3.Restating Problems

I have chosen this piece of work by Jon Burgerman who is an Illustrator. This piece of work is an Illustration.I think it's trying to communicate some form of humour and fun.

I think this is aimed at young children and teenagers who like comics or cartoons or young people who have an interest in cute graphics.

I think this piece of work really engages the targeted audience and captures their attention. This is because it's very vibrant and colourful. The Illustrations are also very detailed to.

I think it's a piece of personal expression as the Illustrations might be characters which some people could relate to.

This kind of image might be used as advertising for stationary and would make some people want to buy it.

I think this image would work very well for branding as it is composed in a nice way.I think the Illustration works very well to capture our attention.Even though the target audience maybe aimed at children and young people,it may also appeal to someone who has an interest in comic books or Illustrated novels and books.

As this piece of work is very vibrant, loud and appealing,it wouldn't appeal to someone who was into the alternative culture. This is because that person has different interests. The way a person dresses can sometimes tell us alot about them. For example someone who might be into the whole trendist and preppy trend might like this piece of work. This gives us a sign. There are alot of different things around us and it's important not to be streotypical.

You can tell this is an Illustration and not a Photograph or an advert as it has no words in it and their is no particular layout for this piece of work other then some Illustrations that have been drawn and put together on one page.Other then this kind of work being put in books and for branding,it may also be used in a magazine on one page as it looks visually interesting to the eye.

The RVJ

Priniciple 1. Draw,work by hand

I have chosen this Leanorado Da Vinci image because it shows ideas that have been sketched out through a drawing. It is not simply just a sketch but an idea that the artist has thought about and he has chosen to do a drawing to express this.

I like sketching as this helps me to plan out my ideas to match a specific component in a brief or project.

Drawing helps me think about things which I can put into practice as I progress further when doing visual research related to a project.

Having the ability to draw out my ideas instead of just writing them down as an impact on my working style. As opposed to just mind mapping to find the right solution to answering a certain aspect of the brief.

I would say this particular drawing done by the artist is intended for people who like Fine Art.The drawing looks quite geometric and in proportion and also detailed. The artist has aimed the target audience at older people in the age range of 35-45 that are into culture and museums and galleries.

The artist has linked in the drawing with the anatomy of the human body as it is related to science aswell.

Because it's very detailed,it catches our attention and makes us think about how the human body looks.
The texture of the paper which the drawing has been done on shows us that it is not for someone who is into comic books or illustrations and is intended for a different target audience.

This sign is showing us this and also the fact that it has been done in pencil or graphite. The mark making is also very detailed.

The artist has composed the drawing to be visually attractive to people who have an interest in the human body or who have an interest in fine art.

Principle 3. Develop Visual Language

This piece of work by Christoph Niemann has a sense of humour to it which I quite like as it has a play on the words and also images that are integrated into it.

I think the meaning of it is for people to engage sexually and not be limited.

The target audience would probably be 20-25 as young people in this age range can find some things quite amusing and funny.

The image wouldn't really be appropriate for anyone who was under the age of 18 as on the image it says "ADULTS ONLY assuming it is for older people.

I think the image is a piece of personal expression that is about society which is making the person think about their views towards sex.

I really like the bold Typography as it is very eye catching and stands out which makes you want to read it and ask yourself what it is trying to say.

The context of this image might cause controversy as it is implying sexual positions and there is a play on the images used in it.

The image has a message in it which is in the form of a joke, which is the play on the images used and also the Typography.

The signs which tell us that it is sexually related is that it has the word "Porn" in it.The colours that have been used are very striking and vibrant.

I think the poster is very effective in making the viewer think about the joke and it's meaning and what link it has in being related in attitudes towards sex.

There is also another sign in the image which refers to the saying "sex sells" as they are also trying to advertise furniture but in another way.I think the images that are used in this poster are quite creative and I like the way the Typography has been used. The composition of it is quite simple but works.
